Prairie Creek Mine

Synopsis

A prospective silver, zinc and lead mine promoted by Canadian Zinc Corp. It is in an extremely sensitive location, in the Mackenzie Mountains of the NWT, on a tributary of the South Nahanni River, upstream of the World Heritage Site. The site is completely surrounded by the Nahanni National Park Reserve, in DehCho territory. Concentrate would be trucked to Fort Nelson, BC. Permits are still required. Social licence is unlikely to ever be granted.

Location

In 2009 the Nahanni National Park Reserve was expanded to 30,000 ha, and now encompasses the expanded area as shown on the map. Note that the Prairie Creek Mine location has been excluded from the park area, an "island" of unprotected land in the middle of a park. More about the park at the Parks Canada website.
