Mt. Milligan Copper-Gold Project

Synopsis

Terrane Metals' Mt. Milligan 1800 ha open pit copper-gold mining project is 93 km NE of Fort St. James. In 2009 the project received BC and federal environmental approvals and a BC mines permit. A 90 km transmission line is required from Mackenzie. Concerns include: the mine will be larger than assessed and two fish-bearing streams will be used as tailings-impoundment areas. First Nations territorial claims have not been resolved. Thompson Creek Metals will take over Terrane in October 2010.

The project lies within traditional territory claims of the McLeod Lake Indian Band, but has led to boundary difficulties with West Moberly and Halfway River First Nations, also within Treaty 8, and the Nak'azdli Band which claims territorial rights. Only McLeod Lake participated in the EAO working group.
