Davie Bay Limestone Quarry

Synopsis

Lehigh Hanson wants to develop a new limestone quarry at Davie Bay on Texada Island. It would be the 5th on Texada, where 3 other quarries are operating below capacity and a 4th is closed. Production is stated to be 240,000 tonnes per year - 10,000 tonnes under the threshold for an environmental assessment. Opponents believe the site which should be designated park, and wish to protect a karst cave network. A Supreme Court challenge was dismissed in 2011, and is under appeal.

In his decision of May 4, 2011, Superior Court Justice Peter Voith had declined to interfere with the decision of the BC Environmental Assessment Office (EAO) to allow Lehigh Hanson Materials Ltd to go ahead with the Texada South Quarry without an environmental assessment. Friends of Davie Bay are appealing that decision. That case will be heard in 2012.
