Quinsam Mine 7 South Expansion

Synopsis

Quinsam Coal has applied for a mining permit amendment for 7-South, a new underground mine, and disposal of potentially acid generating coarse coal rejects in the 2-North Pit Sump and 2-South Pit. Portal development would begin in Q4-2010 with mining until 2014. The Environmental Assessment Office determined that the project was not reviewable. Concerns include avoidance of an EA, elevated sulphur, acid drainage, arsenic and PAHs. Approved in January 2012

Location

Risks are heightened because there already appears to be difficulty lowering or mitigating current levels of the regulated substances from the existing operation, and the difficulty of determining potential impacts in the receiving environment.
