Cathedral Grove Logging

Synopsis

Island Timberlands has started logging in the Cameron River basin adjacent to MacMillan Provincial Park, renowned for Cathedral Grove, its stands of old growth Douglas Fir. Logging near the park increases exposure, alters the hydrology of the area, and increases the risks to the trees in the park. Conservation groups want the company to halt logging and work toward agreement to protect the basin, and want the government to adopt an old growth protection strategy.

South Island Aggregates contaminated wastes

South Island Aggregates owns a quarry on Stebbings Road, south of Shawnigan Lake. The Minister of Environment has drafted a permit to allow discharge of up to 100,000 tonnes per annum from 5 million tonnes of contaminated material (from Victoria) to be dumped at the site. The landfill and discharge are adjacent to Shawnigan Creek and hence downstream to Shawnigan Lake and the drinking water of up to 8000 residents. The demand is for the Minister of Environment to not allow the dumping permit.
