Mackenzie Gas Project

Synopsis

A 1220 km natural gas pipeline from north of Inuvik on the Beaufort Sea, along the Mackenzie River, connecting to existing pipe in Alberta near the BC-AB-NT border. The route passes through the lands of four aboriginal groups. Project costs are estimated at $16 billion. Most of the gas would end up going to the Alberta tar sands. If built, the project would result in large area of NT opened up for drilling and production. Federal government approvals are in place. Commercially viable it is not.
