Jumbo Glacier Resort Project

Synopsis

The project (23 ski lifts, 4 glaciers, 6,500 bed units, and a resort townsite) would have an impact on 6,000 hectares of wild public land, adjacent to the Purcell Wilderness Conservancy and 55 km from Invermere. The Jumbo Resort proposal has been strongly opposed by the local community for the past 15 years. Environmental approval in 2004 and regional district approval in 2009. On March 20, 2012 the project received its final formal approval from the provincial government.

In 2004 the EAO completed its review of the Jumbo Resort project, and the Ministers approved it, but left the decision up to local government. On August 7, 2009, the Regional District of East Kootenay in an 8-7 vote decided to ask the Province to legislate the proposed Jumbo Resort site as a Mountain Resort Municipality, skipping over the rezoning and public consultation processes.

On March 20, 2012, Steve Thompson, Ministor of Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Operations approved the project in an announcement available here.
