Victoria International Marina
|
Synopsis Developer Bob Evans wants to construct a $20-million, 52-slip Victoria International Marina in front of Songhees. Evans is partners with Western Asset Management Development Group of Alberta. Critics fear the marina would compromise safety in Victoria’s busy harbour, adversely affect the environment and reduce the public’s access and ability to enjoy the area and its views. Governments of Victoria and BC have facilitated the project, Canada is next to approve it. |

Excerpted from Save Victoria Harbour Sept 2010: City of Victoria limits the size of the Victoria International Marina but does not have the courage to re-zone the area to parkland, leaving the door open for the destruction of recreational activities and the park-like atmosphere of the north shore. June 2011: Province of BC grants a 2-yr permit of occupation to be followed by a 45-year lease. A valuable harbour property is leased to special interests for a pittance - damaging varied tourism opportunities in favour of an Alberta developer. Transport Canada appears ready grant a permit under the Navigable Waters Protection Act - important safety concerns for seaplane operations and protection the rights and safety of non-powered watercraft users do not seem to be taken seriously.
