2010 Winter Olympics

Synopsis COMPLETED - March 2010. Planning, spending, and construction for the 2010 Olympics started in 2003 and will continue through to decommissioning. Direct and indirect environmental impacts include: expanded development of the land, notably in the Callaghan Valley and highway sections including Eagle Ridge; greenhouse gas emissions totalling 328,000 tonnes (70% from air travel); and billions of taxpayer dollars spent for the amusement of the world’s rich in BC’s LEAST needy communities. |

Resolution |
The Olympic and Paralympic Games were completed in February and March 2010. Most of the ecological impact of the games was related to construction of the facilities and infrastructure, and actual operation of the events. The post-Olympic impacts are primarily economic. |
